MASTERING PORTRAIT LIGHTING

MASTERING PORTRAIT LIGHTING

Lighting is the foundation of every great portrait. Whether you're shooting in a studio or outdoors, understanding how light interacts with your subject is crucial.

Natural Light The golden hour—just after sunrise and before sunset—provides the softest, most flattering light. Position your subject facing the light source for even illumination, or use side lighting for dramatic shadows.

Studio Lighting A classic three-point lighting setup gives you full control. Start with your key light at 45 degrees, add a fill light opposite to soften shadows, and use a hair light from behind for separation.

Tips for Beginners - Always look at the catchlights in your subject's eyes - Use reflectors to bounce light into shadow areas - Don't be afraid to experiment with unconventional angles - Shoot in RAW for maximum editing flexibility
